Life has a way of pushing us toward unexpected paths. For me, moving to Costa Rica wasn’t just a change of scenery—it was a rebirth. After enduring trauma, loss, and years of self-reflection, I realized I needed a drastic shift. This is the story of how I left behind the noise of my past and found serenity, purpose, and even love in the lush landscapes of Costa Rica.
My journey began with a painful wake-up call. In February 2023, I embarked on my first solo cruise—a small but significant step toward independence. Just two days after my birthday, I received the devastating news that my 34-year-old son, Ramone, had passed away in his sleep. The grief was overwhelming, and in that moment, I questioned everything. After burying my son, I took a hard look at my life. My 16-year marriage, though stable, no longer fulfilled me. I had spent decades prioritizing others, never truly discovering who I was. The idea of relocating to Costa Rica came up at a friend’s party, sparking my curiosity.
I knew I needed freedom to heal. After months of contemplation, I asked my wife for a divorce. It wasn’t easy, but we parted amicably—a crucial step in my journey toward self-love. Within a week, the divorce was finalized, and I booked a one-way ticket to Costa Rica for October 31, 2023. Originally, Costa Rica was just a stopover. But from the moment I arrived, I felt a deep connection. The fresh, organic food, slower pace of life, and breathtaking nature were unlike anything I’d experienced. I moved from San Jose to Atenas, a tranquil town that taught me the beauty of silence.
For years, I had been surrounded by noise—traffic, city lights, and constant activity. Atenas was different. The rustling leaves, rhythmic rain on metal roofs, and distant wildlife were initially unsettling. I realized I was afraid of peace. But with time, I learned to embrace it. Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle—meaning “pure life”—resonated with me. I no longer felt trapped in chaos. Instead, I found joy in simple pleasures: fresh mangoes from local markets, morning bird songs, and unhurried conversations.
I had planned to travel the world solo, focusing solely on self-discovery. But as fate would have it, I met Nina—a woman who redefined my expectations. A relationship wasn’t part of the plan, yet she brought a happiness I hadn’t known was possible. My journey taught me that time waits for no one. Instead of resisting her love for me, I embraced it. Nina has became a beautiful addition to my new life, proving that sometimes, the best things come when we least expect them.
Moving to Costa Rica wasn’t just about changing locations—it was about transforming my entire existence. From grief to self-discovery, from fear of solitude to embracing peace, and from planning a solo journey to finding love, this country gave me a fresh start. If you’re at a crossroads, I encourage you to take that leap. Whether it’s relocating abroad, pursuing a dream, or simply choosing happiness, the best chapters of your life may be waiting where you least expect them.
